Sound Power
For this project, students examined the power of words. As a class, we brainstormed a list of “power” words and statements. We then dismantled the list, randomly choosing 10 words and limited ourselves to create a power statement with a maximum of five words. Students recorded themselves saying these statements and used the soundwaves as a way to transfer our spoken words into an abstract visual image. Students were given the choice to create their soundwave translation through paint, collage, or building. Students developed color schemes that would support their statements. An audio track was added with the purpose to personalize the artwork through hearing the actual student voices and provide a more sensory experience for the viewer. As closure to the project, we revisited our words through black and white text slides, experimenting with fonts and composition that would reemphasizing the power of our words.
