Mapping Connections
Mapping Connections is a collection of artworks based from significant stories that took place in Chicago. Students decided the source of their story, which were generated through personal memories, history, the news, or from social media. They used Google Maps to determine the location of this story and used an aerial view of their location to create an abstract paper cut map. While translating stories into visual artworks, students visually linked their stories to a specific location. Students also examined how stories have the ability to isolate or connect. They used color coated string as the medium in which to connect their stories. Through the use of the string, students made physical connections to other stories based on themes of violence, human relationships, childhood memories, and sense of location.
